GB has new Junior European Champion!
Young Laura Collett and Fernhill Sox, riding for Great Britain, and having lead throughout the competition, stayed clear all the way in the Show Jumping arena this afternoon to claim the individual gold medal at the Junior European Championships ahead of Germany’s Juila Krajewski in silver and Franziska Roth, also for Germany in bronze. Not surprisingly, Germany claimed the team gold, but only by a mere 0.5 of a penalty from Great Britain in silver and France in bronze. Ireland finished in eventual 7th after clears from Camilla Spiers and Emily Corbett moved them up the order. Camilla and Portersize Just a Jiff, already the Irish National Champions, also finish best of the Irish in 13th individually. In the senior internationals, Great Britain’s John Paul Sheffield scored a win in both the 1 star and 2 star sections with Westwinds Bravado and Riverside James respectively.

European Juniors take Cross Country in their stride.
Basking in glorious sunshine, Necarne Castle was the place to be this afternoon as spectators enjoyed the Cross Country action. And not surprisingly, with some of the world’s top horses and riders here, the Junior Championship competitors made the track look easy. The overnight leader for Great Britain, Laura Collett and Fernhill Sox retain their lead after a fast XC clear inside the time, as do the German girls in 2nd and 3rd. And that means that Germany retain their gold medal position in the team competition, with Great Britain in silver and France in bronze. The disappointing news for Ireland was that Kildare’s Kate Harrington and Aspen incurred 60 jumping penalties for 2 run outs at the Ski Jump at fence 4, to drop the team down the order to 8th. Highest placed Irish Junior at this stage is the reigning National Champion, Camilla Spiers with Portersize Just a Jiff who are in 16th on 51.0 after going clear inside the time. In the 1 star senior section, overnight leader, Cork’s Michael Ryan and Tragumna faulted early at the same fence and then retired. This allowed Wicklow’s Sam Dempsey to move up into pole position with Teldon. JP Sheffield and Riverside James lead the CCI 2 star for Great Britain. But it’s down to the final Show Jumping phase tomorrow to decide the Junior European Champion for 2006. Only 0.2 of a penalty between Great Britain’s Laura Collett in gold medal position and Juila Krajuski for Germany in silver.

Cross Country set to test European Juniors.
The 2006 Junior European Championships are now well underway. It’s a tremendous honour for Necarne to be hosting the Championships this year and the venue has been blessed with glorious sunshine which is set to continue throughout the weekend. After the first 2 days of Dressage, Ireland currently sit in 7th position of the 14 nations, behind Germany who are in gold medal position, Great Britain in silver and France in bronze. The individual table is led by top British junior, Laura Collett on the Irish bred Fernhill Sox with best of the Irish after Dressage, Kildare’s Kate Harrington. Kate rides Aspen and goes into tomorrow’s XC in 15th position on a score of 46.2. Matthew Wright currently leads the 2 star division with Grove Ducas, whilst Cork’s Michael Ryan and Tragumna currently lead the senior 1 star. Tomorrow’s tough XC phase is expected as usual to shake up the leaderboard considerably, but the British and Irish juniors are renowned for their tough cross country riding, and the squads will be hoping to move well up the order.
